My Materials
Having the right materials is vital to the outcome of the
final art work. Both my oil paints and gouache paints are
made by
M. Graham Paints. I find this brand of paints to
have a beautifully creamy consistency and vibrant, bright
colors.

The M. Graham oil paints are made here in  the U.S., in
Oregon. These paints are highly pigmented, giving them
their brilliant colors. They are also made with pure walnut
oil which provides artists with a solvent-free way to paint.
The high concentrations of pigments combined with the
pure walnut oil make for a paint that will never fade or
discolor.

The M. Graham gouache paints, also made in the U.S., are
handmade with pure honey, and gum arabic. They are made
with the same high-quality and high-concentration of pig
-
ments as the their oils. Gouache has a matte finish when it
dries, which I find to be well-suited for  my style and detail.

For my painting surfaces, I use two different substrates
depending on which medium I am using. For my oil paint
-
ings, I paint on masonite panels which I gesso myself.
Masonite is made of wood chip fibers that are steamed,
pressed and heated to form the board. No glue, form
-
aldehyde-based resins or other materials are used, making
masonite panels and boards a natural product. Gesso is an
acrylic primer which must be painted over the surface of the
masonite panels in order for them to become archival. With
-
out the gesso, the acidity which is inherent in any wood
product would eventually deteriorate the painting.

For my gouache paintings, I paint on 4ply acid free archival
mat board. Mat board makes for a wonderfully sturdy paint
-
ing surface when using a water media such as gouache,
watercolor and even acrylic paints. Because the mat board is
thicker than traditional watercolor paper, it will not curl or
buckle when water is added.
